Julius Caesar
Julius Caesar was one of the greatest and most powerful leaders of all time. Although his birth date is still unknown, people estimate that he was born around 100 B.C. He was born in a Roman family who had no consuls in their history. A consul is one of two leaders who led Rome. This position was very important, and many people worked hard to fill it. Most descendants from his family became part of the senator party; Caesar sought out the popularis party. His father died when he was at the age of 15. Caesar lived in an insula, an apartment house, for most of his childhood. He married Cornelia when he was 17 years old. Lucius Sulla ordered Julius to divorce her at once; Caesar refused to get a divorce. After that he went to Greece to study philosophy and oratory. But then Sulla decided it was acceptable for them to marry and Caesar returned back to Rome. They had a daughter named Julia. Cornelia died around 68 B.C.
In 65 B.C. Julius was elected the position of aedile, and he organized public sports. This cost a lot of money and he went in to debt. He gained the office of praetor in 62 B.C. Cataline, a politician, decided to form a revolt. In breaking up this plot some aristocrats thought they could hurt the powerful leader’s political power but Caesar’s stayed the same. In 60 B.C. Julius formed an alliance with Marcus Licinius Crassus and Gnaeus Pompey. They had made a major accomplishment when Caesar was elected consul in 59 B.C. During the time when he held the position he won the victory of the conservatives hatred. Also in 59 B.C. he married Calpurnia and Pompey married Caesar’s daughter, Julia.
Julius knew he needed military victories to gain even more fame. In 58 B.C. he began to plan a campaign against Gual (presently known as France). It quickly became distinct that he was a military expert. He only was defeated in two battles over the period of 9 years. Pompey became alarmed by Caesars achievements. His distrust put him into an alliance with the conservatives. In 49 B.C, he was mandated to surrender his army. Though he had no intention of obeying this command. He directed his army across a stream into Italy. This started a civil war. It took him 5 years to defeat Pompey’s and his conservative’s armies. In 49 B.C., he was appointed dictator of Rome. He found the left overs of Pompey’s army and caused them to retreat to Egypt. When he found them in Egypt they had already been defeated. It was there that he met Cleopatra.
At a festival Mark Antony offered him the crown of king but because he knew Romans hated kings he turned down the offer. Although many Romans still believed that one day he would intend to make himself king. Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius led a group of aristocrats in a plot to kill him. On March 15, 44 B.C. Caesar was stabbed to death.
